The tradition of lighting a unity candle at wedding ceremonies is relatively new. Though some claim that this practice is a revival of an old pagan ritual, its origins are disputed and uncertain at best. Regardless, it has only become popular in modern times over the last few decades.

Most couples who choose to include a unity candle in their ceremony will start with two separate candles, representing either the individual bride and groom or their families. These are generally lit prior to the service by a representative from each family.

After the bride and groom make their vows, they each use their individual candle to light the larger unity candle, signifying the joining together of two individuals or families.

No one religion lays claim to the unity candle ritual, though some conservative denominations have renounced it because of its alleged pagan ties. If you like the idea of a unity candle lighting, it's certainly something you should feel free to include in your wedding, provided your beliefs do not strictly prohibit such a practice.

Brides' Village on the web provides a nice selection of unity candle sets, should you choose to use one in your ceremony.
