At some point, it may have been an amusing twist on the bride and groom feeding each other wedding cake - bad aim caused icing on the face and a good laugh, in the pie-in-the-face sense. But it's become far too much pie-in-the-face. As you say, it's aggressive, and it's tacky. And I hate to admit I've been at weddings where it's been done (not my own, thank heavens!).
