Reception etiquette: Are you expected to serve a meal?
Filed under: Cakes and Catering, Budget Advice, Etiquette, Receptions
As you go about your wedding planning, you will likely find that catering for your reception can take a big -- maybe the biggest -- bite out of your budget. The easiest way to cut catering costs is to not serve dinner. I found that my estimates were cut by more than half when we went from dinner for 200 to just cake and hors d'oeuvres for the same number of guests. You can also save money by setting up a buffet line rather than paying servers to come around to your guests.
However, wedding etiquette dictates that if you have an evening reception, you should serve a meal. You can get away with light fare at an afternoon event, but if you hold your reception at the dinner hour (5pm or later), you should provide your guests with dinner.
