Don't take word of mouth for granted. I was royally screwed over by a photographer who did my best friend's wedding-- I had met the guy several times due to his working my friend's wedding (I was MOH) and I knew as soon as I got engaged I wanted to book him. He was pretty popular, so I decided to book him as soon as we set a date so I could be sure I got him.
Well, we had a date, but not a location or itinerary, and did not want to commit to a package until we had those things figured out. He swore up, down, and sideways that my signature on the contact and his $500 deposit would be sufficient. Well guess what! One month later his wife called (and very snottilly) informed us that our contract was incomplete and therefore they bumped us for another couple. Sure nice when a vendor cares about you and your business, huh?? You would have thought if the "incomplete contract" was a problem he would have said something instead of saying that my signature and MY MONEY was sufficient. OH and on top of that, when I finally got ahold of the photographer himself (since I wanted to hear it from him, the big chicken, and not his bitchy wife) he siad that I had left no form of paperwork at all! Which was an OUTRIGHT LIE! >:-p We got our deposit back but we told them they could stick their list of referells where the sun don't shine (like I'm going to go hire their friends after they did that to me!)
I ended up finding a different, less expensive photographer I feel clicks MUCH better with me anyway. But don't make the mistake I did! Shop around, even if you're 99% sure a photographer is the one you want.... so in case one DOES screw you over, you have ideas about who else you might like and you don't go into a tizzy like I did.
