"The theme for a wedding," says one wedding pundit after another, "should be fairly traditional." You know, I never used to give the idea of a wedding theme a second thought. It was just something some people did. The more I think about theme weddings, though, the more odd I find the whole idea.

Think about it. Don't weddings have, like, a built-in theme? You know, "two people in love declaring life-long commitment to each other." THAT wedding theme. It's certainly traditional! And, oh, authentic! You've got to admit it's authentic!

Yes, you want it to be pretty, so you'll have a color scheme. Accessories to the wedding will be arranged so that it is as beauteous to the eye, and all your other senses, as it is in your hearts. But themes are -- or should be -- just accessories, accent points. It seems to me that after a certain point, all the "theme-ing" gets to be a distraction from what is really the whole point of the event : Two people in love declaring life-long commitment to each other. Really. What could be a more important "theme" than that?
