At a recent wedding my husband, who is an officiant, was approached by the mother of the bride (MOTB). She carefully explained the workings of the ring-pillow to both he and the groom. "The ring is threaded with this ribbon, and it's pinned to the pillow with this pin." She lifted the bow on the pillow to reveal the hidden pin, nestled underneath. My husband, veteran daddy, recognized it at once. The groom did not, and had to have the mysteries of this very special pin explained to him. A trial run, and they were all set.

During the ceremony, after the rings had been exchanged, the officiant spoke to the gathering. "Wedding ceremonies are filled with fertility symbols," he explained. "There are the fruit and nuts in the traditional wedding cake, there is the rice. But never before have I encountered THIS particular fertility symbol at a wedding." And he held up the very special pin -- a diaper pin.

A pink diaper pin, which, the MOTB then revealed, had once graced the diapers of this very bride. There was a round of chuckles and a few teary eyes at this revelation. You just never know -- I think this brand-new mother-in-law may have just started a new family wedding tradition.
