Summer Budget Travel Tips from Gadling
I find myself of two minds about this question. In my actual wedding, which took place two years ago, I told my friend and attendant Mare that she could wear whatever she wanted. "In fact," I said, when we discussed it at the local diner over pancakes and eggs, "you can wear what you're wearing right now. You look fine."

Mare wouldn't have it. "Kate," she said, "I am wearing cut-off jean shorts. I am not wearing these to your wedding." Fair enough. No cut-off jean shorts. But really, I was so happy that Mare was driving from New York to Canada to watch me get married that she could have worn anything she liked.

But when I read this question on the popular question and answer site ask.metafilter.com, I was aghast. Of course you shouldn't wear your bridesmaid dress to events before the wedding! Thinking in practical terms, what if you dump a glass of red wine down your front? What if you tear the hem or split the seam? What happens if you get the dress dry-cleaned and the color turns or fades so that you stand out like a sore thumb amidst all of the other coordinating bridesmaids? And, as one poster on Metafilter noted, what if the bride sees you in the dress and is angry?

If I were the bride, out and about, and I saw a bridesmaid in her bridesmaid dress months or weeks before the wedding, I'd be annoyed. What about you?
