If you're a regular AisleDash reader, it's probably because you're planning your own wedding, or maybe basking in the glow of your recent nuptials. You know they don't call it your "big day" for nothing. Weddings -- even small ones -- are full of joy, excitement, planning, organization, stress, and expenses.

I think it's time to start thinking about eloping when the last two pieces of the above list start to outweigh the first two. Of course, if you're the type who has dreamed your whole life of that perfect wedding day, it is going to be a huge source of stress for you, because you want it to be perfect. Please get it in your head early that even if it's not perfect, it will still be wonderful. That will save mountains of stress -- but this is a tangent -- back to our subject at hand.

Your wedding day should be about what you want. If the whole wedding scene just strikes you as little more than a dog and pony show, you don't have to put yourself through it.
It's not about your family, either. So many newlyweds-to-be lose too many hours of sleep when their families try to hijack the wedding. If you're worried your family might be this way, you could compromise by letting them throw a reception or other sort of celebration some time after your elopement. If you don't think of it as your wedding day, but rather just a party at which you are the guest of honor, it will be much less stressful for you and easier to pass the planning torch to someone else, provided they want to do this.

Certainly you don't want to offend close friends and family with your decision to elope. While you may have piles of good reasons, they are still likely to feel a little sting at the news. They love you, and they probably want to watch you get married. Brush up on your elopement etiquette before the fact so you don't alienate anyone. If you handle their feelings with understanding, your loved ones will eventually come around and be nothing more than happy for you.
