The history of wedding cakes is fascinating. Wedding cakes have been an important part of the wedding celebration for a heck of a long time. Since ancient Roman times, in fact, when cakes were made of barley or wheat, which was a symbol of fertility.

As part of the celebrations, chunks of the cake were crumbled over the bride, or even thrown at her, as part of a fertility rite.

Whoa! I cannot think of one modern bride who'd appreciate having her cake hurled about by enthusiastic guests, even if she is hoping for a large family. Perhaps this is where modern day cake smashing originates from?

In 1600's England, wedding guests would pile buns in front of the happy couple, so high that the bride and groom could not kiss each other over the bun tower. For convenience, these bun piles were eventually covered with a frosting to hold it all together. This then evolved into tiers of solid cake and voila! the wedding cake as we know it, was born.

Now it seems we have swung full circle with modern day cupcake wedding cakes.

I love this idea. It isn't always a cheaper option than a traditional cake, but it is fun, convenient and extremely trendy. The choices are almost unlimited. Most wedding cake suppliers already provide cupcakes as an alternative to a solid cake and the variety of toppings are mind-blowing and stunningly beautiful. As well, it makes for a much easier way to let guests have a piece of wedding cake to take home - much classier than hacking up your beautiful wedding cakes and serving guests a chunk of sticky cake on a napkin (which is how I have been served wedding cake before.)

If the cost of going this route is too much, then think about doing it yourself. Well, maybe not you, the bride, but I bet there is someone you know, a friend or a family member, who is a dab hand at whipping up cupcakes.

Get yourself some pretty paper cups and stands, a few decorative toppings to match your theme...and go for it!

Alternatively, if cost isn't a major issue, or you loathe the idea of cupcakes, then maybe mini cakes will be your answer.
