The sweetheart table was a pretty obvious choice at our wedding - it was either that or sit with our kids, whom we love...but no. We situated the sweetheart table between two "family" tables - one for his side, one for mine - where our kids, parents, siblings, and honor attendants (best man/matron of honor) sat with their own families. And yes, we made the rounds to visit every table!
My sister and brother-in-law did a similar thing at their wedding ten years ago, and they didn't have kids involved (first marriage for both of them). I think it's a much more enjoyable setup for everyone involved in the wedding than the traditional head table - but as you can see, I'm biased.
