Your reception will probably take the largest single bite of your wedding budget. You want it to be worth those dollars! There are two broad types of reception venue:

1. Full-service, where everything reception-related is provided: tables, linens, place settings, food. Some of these places can even contract photographers, florist, and musicians, if requested.

2. Self-serve: You rent the facility, but only the facility. Many, though not all, facilities can provide tables and chairs, but may not provide linens, dinnerware, glassware, etc. As for music, flowers, and photographer, you're on your own!
Full-service relieves you of much of the hands-on planning. You will consult with their catering or events manager, but you will not be interviewing vendors. You will, of course, pay for this convenience. Only you can decide whether your budget can stretch that far.

Perhaps you're the type who actively enjoys planning and doesn't want/need to hand that over to anyone. If so, you may very well prefer the self-serve option. If this is your option, you may find that your caterer becomes your biggest resource. You can't expect them to plan your reception for you, but if they've been in the business for a while, they will have a wealth of information.

Full-serve or self-serve? Your budget and your personality will make that choice. Either way, relax and have a wonderful time!
