Mothers-of-the-bride (and groom) get a bad rap, but not nearly as bad a rap as MOB dresses. There's a horrible tradition of lacy, sequined, beige atrocities being deemed the only appropriate attire for moms, and it just doesn't have to be that way!

Just as there are plenty of stylish, sophisticated options available for women of all ages, there exists wedding attire to suit the style of all you hot mamas out there. Just look at Helen Mirren if you think a woman of a certain age can't be classy but sexy.

Now, there's nothing wrong with lace, sequins, or even beige for that matter -- it's just that you don't have to feel boxed in. Regardless of the color or fabric you select, the same principals of fit and fashion apply to wedding attire as apply to fashion:
  • Choose a color that's flattering -- Don't wear oatmeal if it's going to wash you out. There are other neutral colors available that are equally appropriate. Think of bronze, silver, and muted blues, greens, and pinks.
  • Find the right fabric -- A heavier and stiffer fabric will hide more bulges than something soft, like chiffon. If you've got a couple of extra pounds around the middle, something like satin or taffeta will help hide the imperfections.

  • Don't settle when it comes to style -- Jackets are a great way to add structure to a dress. If you're not as concerned with your waist as you are with your arms, a wrap might meet your needs. Or, if you aren't worried about any of that, find a cut that suits you and shows off what you've got (as long as you're not showing off too much of what you've got -- an inappropriate dress can make you the center of attention in every way you'd never want).
