The mother of all dresses
Shopping for a wedding gown can be tough; after all, this is The Big Day. Now imagine being the mother of the bride and having to find a dress that is appropriate AND flattering AND in keeping with what the bride and bridesmaids are wearing. And THEN imagine being the mother of the groom, who is supposed to defer to the color choices of the bride and her mother. Goodness.
There is no reason why the mothers of the bride and groom can't look fabulous on their children's wedding day. As the mother of the bride or groom, you want to look for a dress that is in keeping with the overall style of the wedding; if the bridesmaids are wearing long gowns, the mothers can, too, for example. And then you want to choose a style that flatters your figure (which means honestly assessing your figure, the one you have RIGHT NOW, not the one you had before you had the child who is getting married).
The selection of "mother of the bride" dresses is HUGE, but many of the options are not appropriate for a woman with a child old enough to be married. Steer clear of dresses with plunging cleavage or super short hemlines; this is not the day to be flaunting your assets. Instead, look for classic elegance and beautiful detailing. You absolutely CAN be beautiful and sexy on your child's wedding day, but you should do it in an appropriate manner.
It is also important that you communicate with the bride, to be sure you understand her wishes, and with the other mother. Mothers of the bride and groom don't have to match, but it can help to know what style and colors the other mom is looking at.
