I've debated getting cupcakes from the local grocery store. I love their white cake, I've bought it for plenty of birthdays.
My only reservation is that part of the reason I want to go with cupcakes is to have more variety of flavors (my fiance won't eat anything that has been anywhere near chocolate). And going with a grocery store bakery basically just limits me to white, yellow and chocolate cake. I'd hoped to throw some exciting flavors like green tea and carrot cake in there.
We'll see.

Hmmm. That's an interesting problem. I would put your question to the bakery at your supermarket and see if they have any suggestions -- maybe they'd be willing and able to include some sort of tasty filling, or add some sort of flavoring to white cake cupcakes.
Bonus -- if they need to do a test run, POOF! You have dessert for your engagement party or the next Girls' Night!
And, if your supermarket isn't able to accommodate your requests, don't hesitate to check with another one. I didn't go with the supermarket at which I do most of my shopping because they didn't offer as many delicious fillings. Good luck!

Rebecca - Go for it!! Ask your local supermarket what flavor options are available - You may be plesantly surprised!!
For my wedding cake from our local supermarket, we had five layers and five different flavors!
They had the basics you mentioned. They also had Tropical (Mango flavored), Strawberry, Lemon, Carrot, Red Velvet, and more!
They would also do fillings like Lemon, Strawberry, Chocolate, Boston Creme, and more.
They even had the ability to choose icings to match the theme colors, or even to match gum paste flowers if they was preferred over real flowers.
I even had a fountain that was incorporated into the design, and that was rented from them.
Some will even deliver and set to cake up for you for an additional charge.
