I like flowers. And I love being given flowers. I especially like roses. Not those sad, fragrance-free, greenhouse varieties, but gorgeous, blowsy, heavily perfumed rosebuds that fill the air with the rich promise of summer and that speak of romantic interludes in a secret garden. Mmmm. Roses really are the flower of love.

But please, oh please, do not give me a rose that has been covered in plated gold. I understand that it's going to last a lifetime. It's the gift that will never die. Or fade. Or wither. But I also know that it's either going to sit on a shelf and gather a thick layer of dust or it will end up in a box shoved deep inside a wardrobe. Why? Because it's kitchsy in the worst possible way and is utterly without class and style.

Seriously, if you're planning on spending nearly $100 on a gold rose, then don't. Forget it. Rather use that money to get her a fabulous, indulgent fresh bunch of her favourite flowers and take her out to dinner. Much simpler, much nicer.
