So you fell in love with a pair of 4" heels for your wedding, and nothing else will do. Good for you! Start training now! Why? Because if you wear those puppies for the ceremony, you really should keep those same shoes on throughout your reception, and that's going to require some serious calf muscles.

But why should you have to keep those uncomfortable shoes on once the pictures have been taken? Why can't you change into your favorite pair of flats before you hit the dance floor? I have a good reason, and it's not because I'm some crazy wedding Nazi who likes to see brides in pain (well, unless they were mean to me, in which case, cue evil laughter). The thing is, your dress should be hemmed to the height of your shoes. You think that's not important? Take a pair of jeans and put them on with heels. If they're the right length with heels, try folding them up 4". You'll see the flood length come into effect -- and it's not pretty.

This isn't just inappropriate with jeans. It looks RIDICULOUS to have a dress several inches too short as the bride walks down the aisle. It looks equally ridiculous to have the front of the dress dragging all over the floor during the reception (not to mention it can get dangerous -- after a glass or two of champagne, it will become even more challenging for the bride to maneuver around that skirt without tripping).

And so, I implore you, pick a pair of shoes you can live with for the entire night. If you can wear a pair like the Manolo Blahniks above all night, then rock on -- otherwise, find a compromise between comfort and fashion for your Big Day. You'll be glad you did. And so will I.
