There are some very attractive hand-crafted papers out there, papers that will make your invitations look so creative and so classy! Sadly, they also tend to be quite pricey. If you're not having a huge wedding, or if you're very crafty and have a lot of time, you might consider making your own. There are all sorts of sites that will show you how to make your own paper. My favorite is this one. The pictures are marvelously clear and detailed, but she doesn't overwhelm you with tiny details in her explanations. If you like tiny details, then this is probably the best site for you. To get a sense of the process, check out the gallery below. For the full, 41-picture gallery with terrific instructions, hop on over here.
It will take a little experimenting to find the combination of papers that will give the texture and color you want. If you're feeling particularly artsy, you can add bits of moss, grass, or leaves to the paper. These can be pureed into the mix, or they can be pressed onto the wet paper after it's come out of the vat. You can even add items to make the paper smell nice: a cinnamon stick, or vanilla drops, for example.
You can choose to attach sheets of vellum printed with the details to your hand-made paper, or you can write directly onto your paper. If you're going to write on your paper, add a tablespoon of starch to the sludge to prevent the ink from running.
