Last year I wrote about some of my favorite wedding movies, and several of you weighed in on your favorites as well. However, I never thought too much about why wedding movies are so popular. Think about My Big Fat Greek Wedding -- it was made on a tiny budget and went on to be the most lucrative screen comedy ever.So why is it that people come out in droves to see wedding movies? BBC News tells us why wedding movies will never go out of fashion. For one thing, we're all saps for a "happily ever after," and with a wedding movie, that's almost a guarantee. Not everyone wants to see a violent film where monsters destroy the world -- often, when we escape to the world of cinema, it's because we want to get away from the realities of life for a while. Many people don't actually live the "happily ever after" dream, but I think it's reassuring even to those who don't live it that it might still exist, even if it's only for Julia Roberts.
Also, weddings are perfect subjects for movies because it's so simple to create a problem that the characters need to solve -- it's also easy to show these problems snowball. And at the end of the day, after the bride and groom end up getting married even though the cake fell in the pool and the minister didn't speak English and Uncle Dave was drunk and made an inappropriate toast in the middle of the ceremony, we're reminded that the thing that matters is love. And maybe, just maybe, we can leave the theater feeling a little more content with the love we have (or hope to have) in our lives.
