I am always so excited to see Penelope Cruz on the red carpet. Not everyone can pull off the gowns she chooses (like the fabulously frilly pink number she previously wore), but she certainly knows how to work couture. At this year's Academy Awards, Cruz wowed me once again with a Chanel haute couture gown that was anything but a classic Little Black Dress.

If you're looking for a traditional gown, this isn't the look for you. However, if you are seeking inspiration for an exciting, unexpected bridal style, Cruz's ensemble might be just the thing you need. Here's how you can achieve her red carpet glamor (and perhaps she'll keep this type of look in mind if she and Javier Bardem take things to the next level):

  • Got a lot goin' on -- Between the feathery fringe, the rich fabric, and the swagged details, P. Cruz's dress is busy. However, while each embellishment is separated visually, it all goes together. You wouldn't want to try to add all these accents onto a dress with a wimpier fabric.

  • Get fit -- This gown fits perfectly through the bust and waist, making her torso look tiny. That's why the swagged detail on the hip works -- if the upper portion was looser, the overall effect would be sloppy.

  • The right touch -- She's not wearing many accessories, but what she makes them count. Her dress has so much interest that a large quantity of jewelry wouldn't work, but neither would really simple, delicate jewelry. Therefore, her selection of a beautiful ring, bracelet, and ruby accented earrings is the perfect choice -- they are big enough to not get lost, but still compliment the gown.
