Beautiful Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake that straddles about 20 miles of the California/Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It's a popular region for skiing, hiking, gambling, and of course, destination weddings.

Tahoe experiences four seasons a year, with cold winters and hot summers, but is a popular destination no matter the date, and getting there is easy. There is a small airport located at the south shore in California, but you may find it saves you a lot of money to fly to the larger airport in Reno, Nevada, and then drive the short distance to the lake. This airport is served by many discount carriers like Southwest, which regularly offers flights for under $100 one-way.

To be legally married in Tahoe, you will need a marriage license from the state where you intend to hold the wedding. Nevada licenses are a little bit cheaper, at $50, than California licenses, which can be $55-$80, but this is the only real difference. For license information for both states, check here.

Lake Tahoe is a great place to make an extended weekend vacation of your wedding so you and your guests get the most out of the experience.
  • For winter weddings, maybe you want to spend a day on the slopes with your friends and family at one of Tahoe's many ski resorts.
  • You can find plenty of good hikes any time of year. If you want to try something different, check out these horseback trails. (Hint for the wedding party: If you've never ridden horseback before, this might leave you a bit stiff and/or sore, so if you want to ride on the trails, either do it a few days before the wedding, or save it for after the ceremony.)
  • If you feel like staying indoors, you can always test your luck at one of the area's casinos. You can gamble, drink free booze, and check out the entertainment featuring superstar performers.
Many of the ski resorts and casinos have nice guest facilities as well, but your lodging options are nearly unlimited in this popular tourist destination.
If you're not going to have your ceremony at your hotel or resort, weddings on the beach are always nice. Sierra Weddings is a wedding coordinator service in Tahoe that can help you find the most perfect ceremony site for your special day. One of Sierra's recommendations is the old lodge at Valhalla, which would give your wedding a nice rustic touch.

Boat weddings are also popular at Lake Tahoe. Maybe you have access to a private yacht, or you can rent a party boat from this company -- this could be fun for the wedding, reception, rehearsal dinner, or all of the above. You might as well take advantage of the fact that you're on a big lake!

As with any destination wedding planned from a distance, you'll probably want to enlist a wedding coordinator to help you with the details. Find a list of Tahoe wedding planners here.
