Of course we're not going to miss a movie that prominently features a wedding in its plot. We recently saw Made of Honor. If you haven't seen it yet, we're here to give you the dish.We have to admit that we weren't sure about the movie at first. How many times have movies featured a woman (or man) marrying the "wrong" person?
Patrick Dempsey plays Tom, the inventor of the coffee sleeve that you see at just about every coffee shop nowadays. He's a confirmed bachelor and ladies' man. He has strict rules about dating - who he dates, when, and how many times. And he NEVER breaks his rules. Michelle Monaghan plays Hannah, his best friend since college. They see each other every Sunday. Hannah thinks Tom is afraid of commitment; he thinks he's just having fun.
Tom's happy with his routine until Hannah leaves on a business trip to Scotland for six weeks. And things aren't the same without her. No one else knows he likes his dim sum steamed instead of fried, or tells him the best thing to order for dessert and then shares. He gets up the nerve to tell her that he has feelings for her - only, she has a surprise with her when she gets back. His name is Colin (Kevin McKidd) and his family owns the largest whisky distillery in Scotland. Oh, and they're getting married.
Since Tom is her best friend, Hannah asks him to be her maid of honor (MOH). He balks at first, but his buddies convince him to go ahead. Because as MOH, he can keep close tabs on the wedding. His goal? Steal the bride.
Tom treats his duties as a joke until he realizes how much it means to Hannah. His friends pitch in, buying him bridal magazines that list the duties of the MOH. And he even watches a video featuring Elisabeth Hasselbeck (from The View) telling women how to be the best MOH that they can be.
Hannah and Colin's wedding takes place in Scotland. The way they treated the Scottish wedding traditions - as if they were a bit silly and distasteful to spoiled Americans - bothered me a little. The mother of the groom mentioned several times that what they were doing was tradition, which more than once got strange looks from the Yanks. Of course, things that are foreign to us may seem a bit odd at first, but it seemed like the movie treated it just a bit condescendingly. However, it's a minor part of the film. It just served to show how little in common Hannah had with her Scottish beau. Still, after seeing the amazing scenery in Scotland, you'll wish you were getting married there.
The movie overall was fun and entertaining. There's a running gag with glowing thunder beads that's funny. Watch for Dempsey's juggling scene. And the physical comedy - who knew Dempsey could pratfall with the best of them? He's adorable and funny throughout. Michelle Monaghan is gorgeous. And it's nice to see that they never paint Colin as a bad guy who deserves to lose the girl.
Overall, the movie is fun and lighthearted. And while the ending is pretty obvious from the beginning, it's an enjoyable ride to get there. Our opinion: it's good fun and Dempsey totally makes the movie worthwhile. Go see it!
