Beach weddings are, by their very nature, less formal than a traditional wedding.

Your dress should also be less stylised. Heavily beaded, satin or taffeta creations will look out of place on a beach.

The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable. Sand, salty air, sea water and hot sunshine can ruin your day (and your dress) so rather avoid a puffed up fairytale gown. A full length, traditional dress simply isn't practical and a sweaty, satin-encased bride isn't a great look either.

There designers who specialise in beach wedding dresses but if you see a dress you like from a traditional wedding dress designer, enquire if it can be adapted to suit a beach setting. Or look for a designer who will create something special, just for you.

  • Rather choose a short length, such as a cocktail or tea length dress or, if you can't envisage wearing anything but a long dress, at least abstain from having a flowing train or veil and keep the hemline just above your ankles.
  • Choose a dress that fits fairly closely. A flowing, floaty dress could catch the breeze and fly up right over your head, or at the very least, show off your underwear.
  • Silks, Organza, Crepe, Linen and Chiffon are good lightweight choices of material for your beach wedding dress.
  • Spaghetti Straps, Halter tops and strapless are great styles.
  • If you don't want to wear a white dress, floral patterns can look stunning.
Lastly, don't forget your feet. You could use barefoot sandals or choose a pair of pretty flats.
