WeddingWise: How to walk in high heels
Walking in high heels is deceptively tricky. If you're a novice, you worry about tripping all over yourself. If you've been wearing heels for years, chances are you could stand to improve your technique - esp. if your feet hurt at the end of the night. Here are our favorite tips to help you wear heels gracefully:
- Baby steps: If you've never worn heels before, start with low chunky heels and work your way up to those sexy stilettos you've had your eyes on.
- Stand up straight: Check your posture while standing in front of a mirror - correct posture is the secret to walking in heels. Activate your core muscles and don't bend at the ankles (ouch!).
- Practice makes perfect: Practice walking at home on uncarpeted floors. Build up your confidence by starting slowly until you're not wobbling. Don't forget to stand up straight and use your abs!
- Turn, baby, turn: Once you can walk in a straight line without feeling like you're going to topple over, practice advanced techniques like turning, dancing, and, believe it or not, stopping quickly. You never know when a stray child or cocktail waiter will cut you off. You do not want to topple over when they do.
- Don't forget the stairs! Always use the handrails if you have to use stairs while wearing heels. If you're walking upstairs the entire foot (sole and heel) must land on each step (not just the tip toes). When descending, only the sole needs to land on the step. Take it slow and steady - it's much more elegant than falling down a flight of stairs!
- Take them off! Don't attempt to walk on ice or snow in stilettos, and thread carefully or avoid grass, gravel, etc...Heels are worn strictly for looks - they're not meant to go everywhere. Don't walk long distances in very high heels, especially if you're not used to it. Bring a back-up shoe if you must.
