I had a very similar experience when shopping for my dress. We had a very small ceremony with just mine and his immediate family. I wanted a very simple dress to match the simple and small ceremony and with a price tag to match.
I first went to one of the big chain bridal stores and the lady gave me the same look when I told her my wedding was a month away. I wanted to look at some of the bridesmaid and "special occasion" dresses too because I figure di would find something more appropriate there, however, she wanted to keep steering me toward the big gaudy dresses. I promptly left the store.
I went to a small boutique, they let me try on the sample/display dresses until I found something off the rack that I liked and could be altered to fit. They didn't try to push me into a more elaborate dress or try to convince me that I needed a veil and 5,000 other accessories. They gave me exactly what I was looking for. I would suggest you find a boutique bridal store.

I went through the same snarky attitude at a boutique store. The woman rushed me, told me I didn't know what I was talking about when describing the dresses I had been trying on....and then told me I had no business thinking of trying on a sample sale gown at another store that I "couldn't afford"! The knot said this shop ( Lotus Bridal) had great service, and while I did pick a dress I tried on from there... I bought it for less at RK Bridal with a woman who respected my time and money.
