Let's Eat!
Dinnerware (Everyday)
You'll want everyday dinnerware for pizza, burgers or taco night! I recommend basic white porcelain or non-decorated fine bone china as they both are extremely durable, making them oven-to-table convenient and microwave- and dishwasher-safe.
8 - 16 dinner plates (Register for extra dinner plates, since those are the most used.)
8 - 12 soup/cereal bowls
8 - 12 salad/dessert plates
8 - 12 mugs
2 medium platters
2 large platters
2 large serving bowls
1 sugar bowl and creamer
1 salt and pepper set
1 pitcher
1 covered butter dish
Note: Earthenware is also great for everyday use and can usually be found in sets of four dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and mugs.
Dinnerware (Dressy)
Step it up for special occasions like Friday night or New Year's Eve. I recommend decorated fine bone china. Surprisingly durable, it'll dress up any table, and everything is guaranteed to taste better!

Reader comments (Page 1 of 1)
This list is extremely old-fashioned. What's more appropriate is choosing just one style of dinnerware, flatware, and drinkware that is sturdy enough for everyday use, yet chic enough to use when company is over. It takes up so much space, costs so much money, and is so very, very wasteful of resources to have so many sets of everything. What's the point of having China if you only use it a few times a year? If you want fine China and crystal, go ahead and register for it! But use it every morning for breakfast.
I agree with your Kerra! My fiance and I are getting married next Spring and we are starting out completely new, we have nothing (not even a strainer..which did not make the list!) We are registering for plain white dinnerware, it's practical and can be used for all occassions. I don't see the point in having people spend crazy amounts of money so that you can have something sit in your cupboard for many years to come!
A strainer is also known as a colander and it is located on the list under Kitchen Accessories. :)
