The President and First Lady Request the Honour of Your Presence
Wedding Date: May 21, 1874
The romantic wedding of Nellie Grant, the eighteen-year-old daughter of President Ulysses S. Grant, and her groom, a member of the England gentry, was a truly beautiful celebration. The bride, who fell in love with her future husband on an Atlantic cruise, said "I do" in the East Room of the White House against a beautiful spring backdrop of bountiful white flowers.
Unfortunately, her marriage did not have a fairy-tale ending. In 1889, after enduring years of her husband's heavy drinking and homesick for America, she received a divorce.

Teddy Roosevelt's daughter had a wild reputation and was known for daring behavior like flirting without the presence of a chaperone, smoking and chewing gum. So it was no surprise that the rebellious "Princess Alice" wanted to be the absolute center of attention at her White House wedding. The guests had no choice but to focus on her wedding dress and its 18-foot train -- the bride refused to have bridesmaids because she wanted the spotlight all to herself.

Much like Alice Roosevelt's marriage, the wedding of Eleanor Wilson surprised and interested the public. At the age of 23, Eleanor, the daughter of President Woodrow Wilson, married Williams Gibbs McAdoo, the 56-year-old Secretary of the Treasury in the Blue Room of the White House.
McAdoo seemed to view his marriage as a way to gain political power: After trying and failing to get a presidential nomination, he divorced Wilson in 1923 and later married another younger woman.

The younger daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson married Patrick John Nugent at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C., with 55 million people watching on television. The reception took place in the White House's Blue Room and included a 300-pound, 13-tier wedding cake decorated with swans.
The bride told CBS News in a recent interview that there were protesters at the church when they arrived because her wedding day was the anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima. She hadn't realized her wedding date fell on a significant, historical day. The couple later divorced and the marriage was annulled in 1979.

In the first modern White House wedding, Lynda Bird Johnson was escorted by her father, President Lyndon B. Johnson, when she exchanged vows with her groom, a Marine Corps captain, in the East Room of the White House. In a nod to the groom's military affiliation (he served in Vietnam), the newlyweds walked under the crossed swords of Marines after the ceremony.

Tricia Nixon's Rose Garden ceremony is remembered as one of the loveliest White House weddings -- and Mother Nature herself had a hand in the day's success. The wedding morning was rainy, but the clouds parted in time for the bride, escorted by her father, President Richard Nixon, to walk down the aisle in sunshine.
In a nod to history, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, who married at the White House 65 years before, was a guest.

If you think the daughter of President Ronald Reagan would have a conservative White House wedding, think again. Patti Davis, who was somewhat of a black sheep in the family because of her liberal political views and appearances in soap operas, married her yoga instructor boyfriend in a low-key ceremony at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles.

It's no surprise that Caroline Kennedy's wedding was a classically elegant affair -- the bride's mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, planned the celebration. The bride, who wore a traditional gown designed by Carolina Herrera, exchanged vows in a church ceremony in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with her brother John F. Kennedy Jr. acting as the best man.

Love triumphed over political ideologies when Dorothy Walker Bush, daughter of President George H.W. Bush, married Robert P. Koch, then a Democratic Congressional aide. The bride said "I do" at the presidential retreat Camp David, becoming the first presidential child to marry there.

President Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, planned a low-key, DIY-wedding in 1996 to Jim Wentzel. The bride baked her own three-tier wedding cake and the couple recited their vows beneath a trellis fashioned from her old swing set. The wedding was held at the bride's late grandmother's home, The Pond House in Plains, Georgia.

Why the hate? I cannot imagine the energy you expend on people who have no idea you are alive.
Where is the "hate"? I see no comment thats hateful.
l.k, it's highly probably AOL removed them.
Best wishes to the bride!
How sad that someone writes for a medium that reaches as many people as AOL does and doesn't understand American History well enough to avoid terms like "American Royalty" when writing about the Nixons. Richard Nixon's biggest downfall was that he thought he didn't know the difference between a monarchy and a democracy. He had a "let them eat cake" attitude toward the American people and thought he could get away with anything.
Sounds like the present occupant of the White House....
IndyMom is uninformed and I am embarrassed for her. The best that could be said is that she was media brainwashed. I knew Richard Nixon, worked for him and admired him very much. He loved people. What happened to him is complex, ugly and an American shame but he was a victim, and because he was our President, we were all victims. Media and money have the power to crush anyone they choose to destroy - and obviously, get anyone elected..
Please don't be embarrassed for me...be embarrassed for yourself for being affiliated with a person like that. A victim? Are you one of those people who is so devoid of morals that you can rationalize ANYthing? Exactly how many of your co-workers went to prison? Why did Nixon resign if he was so innocent? And, as for Barack Obama, you would never find him orchestrating a break-in of his opponent's campaign headquarters. He's far too classy and intelligent. Nixon was a total lowlife who resigned in disgrace. They didn't call him "Tricky Dick" for no reason!
I love Tricia NIxon......Kep up the good marriage.
I hope the wedding Is a nice affair, time to out politics aside. Congrats to the couple......
May they have a happy life together.
I don't set much store by weddings. It's so easy to get married and so few either last or are happy. I think big celebrations should be held for fifth, tenth and later anniversaries. They would mean much more.
What do you mean "as the nation watched?" As I recall television coverage of LBJ's daughters only allowed us to see people arriving for the ceremony. The actual ceremonies were never televised.
By far, the most beautiful daughter was Trisha Nixon. She looked like a china doll and wore a simple but incredibly elegant dress. However, where was Julie's wedding who married David Eisenhower? She was also a lovely bride.
Chelsea wants Bill to loose 15 lbs before the wedding. Do you see the roll above her belt?
I got married November 14 th, 1959. I've been married 51 years this November 14. Give your husband breathing room, meaning a night out with his friends. Tonight my husband is meeting his long time friend at the Ft. Myer Officers' Club for dinner. They have been meeting each other for many years. Sometimes I go to the movies with my friends or just stay at home reading a good book. Both are retired Colonel's and love to talk about war stories together. They even went back to Vietnam together to see how the country looked after the crisis. I am not a jealous person thinking he's with someone else because I feel grounded in my marriage. Don't get me wrong; we do many things together that I enjoy. We go to church together and enjoy a beautiful brunch together after church
Very nice post. I have been married 27 years and I agree each person is an individual. My husband and I enjoy doing things togehter but we also enjoy having time with friends. I told my husband a long time ago I am your wife--not your Mom. I don't understand women who try to make their husband someone he is not--I know my husband has his faults but God knows I have more. We have learned each others and have learned to live with them.
I hope you and your husband have many more years to celebrate your lives together.
P.S. Thank your husband for his serivce. I have 2 children that are in the Army.
Well said! I don't understand why people have to lose their individuality when they get married. After all, isn't that what attracted you to each other? It would be a boring world if everyone was the same. Embrace the differences a give each other a little room. Otherwise you will smother each other and become another statistic.
The best "first daughter" wedding in my life was MY first daughter's wedding two months ago.=----and it didn't cost an idiotic $2 million dollars. It's a farce and a huge rip-off.
Not to mention, Chelsea Clinton is marrying the son of a convicted felon - a man who the prosecutor called a "One Man Crime Wave", who had fraudulent business deals dating back to 1980 by the time he was prosecuted in 2000. And the fiance works on Wall Street - so it seems the apple didn't fall far from the tree... Good luck with that, Chelsea! (Yep, guess I'm just a "hater".)
@Whiterose, were you born stupid and hateful, or have you morphed into your current self by overdosing on faux news? Jump off your trailer - preferably face first.
Considering the people featured, I am dismayed that Julie Nixon, daughter of a President and David Eisenhower, son of a President were not included...
