What It's About: This true story is ultimately a tale of friendship among six lovable, tough-as-steel Southern gals. It is a tearjerker, too, so consider yourself warned! Julia Roberts plays the role of Shelby, a young woman with type 1 diabetes. Though the film follows her over the course of three years, it all begins at a beauty parlor on the morning of her wedding as she's getting her hair done with her mother, played by Sally Fields. There are many life lessons to learn from this poignant portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship amid the life changes of marriage, motherhood and illness.

The Takeaway:
  • If you like pink and want to use two different shades of it (say, blush and bashful) for your wedding color palette, go ahead. It's your day.

  • Try not to argue with your mother on the morning of the wedding. Leave your differences aside and past disagreements behind you. Just focus on the joy of the day.

  • The most famous groom's cake of all time? The bleeding red-velvet armadillo, complete with tail and gray frosting. Top that!

  • Even though you're marrying your best friend, remember that your girlfriends are just as important, and will also be there for you through good times and bad.
