After announcing that Prince William and Catherine "Kate" Middleton were engaged both families released statements expressing their happiness over the upcoming wedding.

In a statement released from Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip "are absolutely delighted for them both." And the groom's father, Prince Charles, said he was "absolutely thrilled," while his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, said her stepson's engagement was "the most brilliant news."

The groom's brother, Prince Harry, said he was "delighted that my brother has popped the question!" Adding that Middleton would be his sister, he said, "I have always wanted (one)."

Catherine "Kate" Middleton's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, said Tuesday that they were "delighted" by the news of their daughter's engagement to Prince William and they are "extremely fond of their future son-in-law.

Reading from a statement, the father of the bride said, "I would just like to say that Carole and I are absolutely delighted by today's announcement and thrilled at the prospect of a wedding sometime next year. As you know Catherine and Prince William have been going out together for quite a number of years which is great for us because we've got to know William really well."

He added, "We all think he's wonderful and we're extremely fond of him. They make a lovely couple, they're great fun to be with and we've had a lot of laughs together. We wish them every happiness for the future."

Prince William reportedly asked Kate's father for permission to marry his daughter before proposing while on vacation in Kenya with his bride-to-be last month.
