Yesterday, the Palace announced that Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth II and Kate's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, will foot the bill for the wedding ceremony and reception, but that taxpayers will pick up the tab for "security and transport."
At Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 1981 wedding two million people lined the streets of London to see the bride arrive at St. Paul's Cathedral for her wedding ceremony and the couple make their way to Buckingham Palace for the reception.
The Sun is reporting that Kate's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton have offered £100,000 toward their daughter's wedding.
A senior St. James's Palace aide said yesterday that the family had been "extremely generous and keen to contribute."
A source close to the Middleton family told the Sun, "They always expected to fork out for Kate's wedding and had sensibly put substantial funds aside for the event. They also recognize that there is a public mood of restraint and austerity in difficult times. It's to their great credit that they are doing this."
Mr. and Mrs. Middleton will cover the cost of Kate's wedding dress and the couple's honeymoon, as well as parts of the ceremony and reception.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles are expected to pay the majority of the multimillion pound wedding costs.
Security and related expenses that British taxpayers will pay are estimated at more than £5million.
