Novelty cakes are nothing new but to find a baker who consistently does it really well isn't always easy. There are so many design elements in a novelty cake that it must be really neatly executed, otherwise it runs the risk of looking shoddy and amateurish. That's why we are so pleased to have found Dragons and Daffodils Cakes, a Welsh bakery that produces wonderful novelty cakes and figurines.

One of the quirkiest figurines they make are sheep. Yes, amazingly, sheep, which are apparently much-loved by Welsh brides and grooms living abroad and wanting a little touch of home at their wedding. The sheep can be used as cake toppers, or as pillars to support each cake tier. Whichever way, they are a lot of fun and quite adorable. Other figurines include Welsh dragons, mice and rabbits and enormously cute miniature bride and groom replicas.

There's nothing new about iced wedding biscuits and there's no doubt that they do make great wedding favors. But how about an iced biscuit bouquet? It's certainly a fun and quirky idea and while it isn't really suitable for a traditional and classic wedding (can you just imagine the bride swooshing down the aisle holding a bunch of biccies?) it could be quite a funky bouquet alternative for the offbeat bride in a fun and informal setting. Well, why not?

Imagine spending ages hunting down your dream wedding dress, finding it, paying a small fortune for it and then, when you go to collect it, finding that the dress shop has closed. A nightmare scenario for any bride!

Well, it's something that recently happened to 170 women in England. The shop they bought their dress from unexpectedly closed its doors last month, after just two years of trading.

It's been an enormous shock for the brides affected and and some of them are so angry they have sent death threats to the shop owner, Lisa Clarkson, who has gone into hiding.

Sadly, there will be no refunds and no wedding dresses for the dress-less brides, leaving some women scrambling to find a dress just days before their wedding, and paying a fortune for a last-minute replacement.

The worrying thing is, could this happen to you? With the current economic downturn, more and more businesses are feeling the pinch so it pays to be aware and take some steps to protect yourself:
  • Buy from a well-known, reputable dress shop rather than one with a short and unknown trading history.
  • Don't pay for your dress in full, in advance.
  • Collect your dress as soon as possible after you have paid for it, rather than leaving it until just before your wedding day.

If you're trying to rein in the spending, and endeavoring to stick to a tight wedding budget, then you you may be thinking hard about where you can shave off unnecessary extras and reduce costs. You probably won't want to do that with your wedding cake - who wants a nasty, poor quality cake? Nobody. But an area where expenditure can easily be reduced is your wedding stationery.

Michael Ballack, the German footballer who plays for UK team, Chelsea, married Simone Lambe, his partner of ten years, (yes, TEN years) in Germany yesterday. We wonder what took them so long? The couple already have three children but that didn't stop them from having a huge, sophisticated and glitzy wedding. (Can any footballer ever get married without an enormous sprinkling of glitz-dust?)

The wedding colour was an exquisitely pretty cornflower blue. We love the super-glamorous bridesmaids dresses in blue satin, with loads of heavy crystal embellishments.

The bride wore a beautiful, figure-hugging dress, lavishly studded with crystals, and adorned with loads of sexy feathery detail, including a stylish feathered shoulder strap. This is definitely a grown-up's version of a little girl's fairytale gown.

The flower dilemma: you really want to have pretty flowers at your wedding but, with the current economic downswing, are desperate to cut costs. How do you do it without compromising on style?

Here's one solution. Make them yourself from paper.

We love these flower kits from Paper Source. They have a large and varied range to choose from and all of them are seriously good. From vintage flowers to funky-retro to bright and cheerful to pastel and pretty, they have it all. The kits are very reasonably priced, around $14 for about 12 or 14 flowers. Included in the kits are pre-cut flower shapes, leaf-shapes, floral wire, floral tape and, of course, instructions on how to assemble the flowers. (Kit contents vary according to designs).

Choosing the music for your wedding can be just as difficult and fraught with tension as anything else you have to decide on. There are any number of beautiful, traditional pieces of wedding music to choose from, but what if you just don't want the standard 'weddingy' tunes?

What if you're having a non-religious ceremony? You know that you want something emotive, perhaps, soul-stirring and uplifting, or maybe just a very pretty tune. What is suitable?

We've put together a few pieces of non-bridal music that are still perfect for a wedding.
