Apparently, there is someone who can have-a de Mango -- Chris Kattan married model Sunshine Tutt last Saturday in an environmentally friendly wedding set at California's Yosemite Valley.

The couple has been engaged for a year and a half -- Chris proposed to Sunshine on Christmas Eve, 2006, at her grandmother's home. Their wedding was green right from the get-go, with invitations made of flower seed paper that the guests could plant in their gardens.

They didn't really "do" wedding favors at Renaissance weddings. Any gift-giving was to the happy couple, and, though common. even that wasn't universal. So when you're looking for favors for your Renaissance (or historical) themed wedding, you'll need to get a little creative.

Here's one idea. Every household worth the name, in just about every era of time (until our own) would have had a kitchen garden. There, the busy housewife would pluck the vegetables for that evening's meal, and the herbs to flavor it. Every housewife would also know the medicinal and mystical uses of her fresh-picked herbs.

My family is from Virginia. His is from Oregon. Both of our families are huge. Getting everyone together for a wedding would have been a huge expense for everyone involved. At least half of our potential guest list would be facing a cross country trip, and then we'd be facing the bill to host them all. Oof.

So we eloped.

The cost of traveling is a huge concern these days, and you should consider how much you're asking of people when you invite them to a wedding hundreds of miles from home. If your guests share my family's mentality that weddings are mandatory, then you might actually be doing them a favor by trimming the guest list. You don't have to elope, but keeping a wedding small and intimate will save money across the board, not to mention the environmental impact of all that travel.

A romantic and eco-friendly way to add some ambiance to your outdoor event. These glass balls have phosphorescent dust inside. If at all possible, hang them outside the day before. That will be one task completed a little early, they'll look pretty all day, and they'll also be charging in the sun, getting ready for the evening!

When the sun sets, they'll start to glow, and they'll keep glowing for 2 to 4 hours, depending on how sunny the day has been. Remember, these will glow softly rather than beam brightly. You won't want to make them your sole source of light, but they'll definitely add to the mood.

If you order a gift from VivaTerra, you have the choice of having it gift wrapped either in recycled paper or re-usable fabric. But why leave such a great idea to VivaTerra? Even if you don't want any of their (fabulous) gift items, you can still use the fabric-as-wrapping idea.

If your gift is kitchen ware, wrap it in a couple of nice tea towels held together with ... kitchen string? Twist ties? Very often tree-free and/or recycled invitations are more expensive than the less eco-friendly sorts. Given the cost of the average wedding, it's no surprise that many couples opt to put budget concerns over environmental ones, and buy the regular invitations.

However, there are more options than green-and-pricey and wasteful-and-cheap(er). What if you could get recycled invitations for about a dollar apiece? Would that be attractive enough? You'd have to print them yourself, mind you, but as long as you have a decent printer, that shouldn't be too difficult. You won't get letterpress at home, but if you're thinking letterpress, saving money probably isn't a primary concern, anyway...

Rather than purchase an entire kit, complete with card, overlay, envelope and reply card, you purchase the items you require. Maybe you won't require their overlay, opting to save even more money by cutting your own. You can search the site by style, color, motif. South African designers Julian and Franz Grabe have a way with flowers. And leaves. Plants in general, really. At a show in Johannesburg, they stole the show with their designs, most particularly their "floral couture."

We can't deny that it looks pretty, but this is one of those ideas that's better in fantasy than reality. With about a two-day shelf life before the whole thing starts to wilt and go brown, any alterations had better be done on the spot! And, though the gown reportedly smelled divine, for the bride's sake we hope that bees prefer to steer clear of walking, talking flowers.

Oh, well: for all its practical failings, you can't argue its environmental virtue. After you slip the dress off, just lie it somewhere in your garden. A month after the honeymoon, there'll be nothing left but a few petals in the wind ...

The outside is hand-polished with macadamia oil (what else?), while the inside is colored, then polished to mirror gloss.

There is very little about planning a wedding, and in particular, a green wedding, that isn't covered in My EcoChic Wedding. There's a wedding classified market, where you can buy, sell, and trade items, there are lists of vendors and lists of questions to ask those vendors, there are budget worksheets, timelines, to-do lists for every member of the wedding party. They will, for a fee, host your very own wedding website, which they'll let you try out free for a week.

They even give you a free, down-loadable 43-page wedding planning book. This is a seriously all-inclusive site, and though eco-oriented, it's not preachy. Even if you're not interested in having a 'green' wedding, you'll find the site useful. And you never know, some of those green tips might save you a little green money!

The picture of the arrangement in a teacup comes from Teleflora, so you could just order a few of these, but how much more personal (and less expensive!) to make your own. If you don't have a collection of teacups, you can find pretty and inexpensive cups from department stores. Dollar stores have even been known to carry cups and saucers!

Instead of an arrangement of cut flowers, you could put in a small plant from your very own garden or indoor plants. African violets would work, Devon violets, marigolds, or any other plant with smallish blossoms and foliage.

For a bridesmaid lunch, for a shower, or even, if you have enough cups and saucers, your reception, these gifts can be recycled, obviously: replant the flower in a pot, and reuse the teacup as a ... teacup!

Balloons are a bright and pretty way to add color to your informal wedding -- but they're not very environmentally friendly. If you plan a balloon release (check on this: it's illegal in many jurisdictions), or if a few manage to escape despite your precautions, it's a sad fact that deflated and popped vinyl balloons are a threat to wildlife. A shriveled balloon can look like a nice yummy worm to an unsuspecting bird, which is then choked by someone's "harmless" decor.

But balloons are fun. Are there alternatives? Well, there are Mylar balloons, of course, which when deflated, don't shrivel as latex does -- but they're not more bio-degradable. And then there are paper balloons.

Yes, paper, coated in water-soluble PVA. These paper balloons are completely bio-degradable, they can be filled with helium using a standard pump, they don't pop readily as do latex, and -- awwww -- they're shaped like doves. They've been around a while, too: they were released to great audience satisfaction at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. When released, they even look like they're flapping their wings.

When you're aiming for green entertaining, re-usable items are best. Sometimes, though, you may decide that it's just not feasible. If you're looking for a less wasteful alternative to standard plastic disposable plates, cups and cutlery, you might consider Preserve.

This company makes bright and informal tableware from 100% recycled plastic. It's sturdy enough that it can be reused dozens of times, and, when it's finally served its final meal, it can be recycled. You probably wouldn't use anything this informal for any but the most casual of weddings, but it could easily be used for a shower.

Recycled, recycle-able plastic tableware. It's not a perfect solution, but it's not the worst, either. A decent compromise for moments of need!

We often have the idea that going green is more expensive than doing it the old way. It sure seems so, with organic foods tending to cost noticeably more than non-organic, and with the whole range of new "green" items on the market. Want to go green? Buy, buy, buy!

Going green, however, does not mean buying a heap of new stuff with "green" or "eco" in the label. If you think about that for a second, it's pretty clear that "buying stuff" and "going green" are mostly opposites. Going green doesn't require trips to the store and a huge outlay of money: it requires creativity.

You supply the picture and the text you want on your mug/cup/pot, and you will receive the finished product, filled with earth and the flower of your choice. You can choose from cosmos, forget-me-not, shasta daisy, shamrocks, sunflower, marigold, or, for a kitchen gardener, herbs, pepper or thyme.

Not a garden party, but a garden shower. The first is tea and sandwiches in a gorgeous garden -- the second gives the bride and groom the tools to create their own gorgeous garden. It would be fun to have the shower outdoors, but if that's not feasible, you can maintain the garden feel indoors.

Give out colorful seed packages as favors. The guests can bring whatever they like: hand tools, larger tools, bulbs and seeds, gardening gloves, decorative flagstones, even garden furniture, a bird bath or sundial! If you just can't decide, there's the versatile gift certificate for a garden center. Have all the gifts put into a shiny new wheelbarrow, and roll them in to the blossoming bride!
