We asked expert pastry chef Anne Thornton of Food Network's Dessert First for her take on the latest trends and why two cakes are always better than one (thanks to Prince William and Kate):

What should couples look for when choosing a wedding cake? Anything they should avoid?
They should try a bunch of different flavors of cakes and know what they like. You really want your wedding cake to represent you as a couple. Avoid worrying about your guests likes and dislikes. Go with what you love and your guests will be thrilled.

What are some current trends in cake flavors, decorating and shapes?
Thanks to all the wonderful cake shows out there people are going for nontraditional cakes. I think this is really fun. Personally I care more about the cake being delicious than anything else. But I love the artistry, and people like Sylvia Weinstock and Ron Ben Israel are making museum-worthy cakes with a ton of flavor.

What are the hottest cake alternatives right now?
Croquembouche made with either cream puffs or macaroons is a popular elegant cake alternative -- although they are considered traditional wedding cakes in France.
Do you think the royal wedding cake will inspire any trends?
I loved that they had two cakes. William chose the chocolate biscuit cake because it was a childhood favorite and the other was a gorgeous traditional work of art. It is so important for the cake to represent you as a couple and I think this modern two-cake approach really represented William and Kate.
We asked Annie Lee, principal planner at Daughter of Design, how you can incorporate elements from Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal nuptials into your own wedding:

Do you think white and ivory bridesmaid dresses will become popular because of Pippa Middleton?
I hope so! I think a bridesmaid in white or ivory shows a certain confidence from the bride that she can share the color and still shine. There are a few guidelines though. The bride's dress should be more ornate, fuller and/or significant so that she stands out and distinguishes herself from the other ladies. On this note, a guest in white is still taboo!

Taking inspiration from Kate's sapphire ring, what are some other colored stone (or non-traditional) engagement ring styles that guys should look for?
Any of the precious and rare gemstones are great options: ruby, emerald, sapphire. Also, diamonds come in a variety of colors like pink, yellow and black. Guys, try to pick a color that is flattering and goes well with the tones that your fiancee typically wears. Remember, this is an accessory that is worn every day so you want it to be something that complements her daily life!

Which types of flowers should brides choose for an all-white bouquet and centerpieces?
There are lots of beautiful white flowers. I think it depends on the season and the theme of the wedding. For modern, loft-type weddings, I love white callas, tulips and orchids as some options. For springy garden weddings, you have to go for the ever-coveted peonies and ranunculus!

Which blooms give you the most bang for your buck?
Roses are always wallet friendly. Plus, since florists pay for flowers per stem, blooms like hydrangeas are great because each one is so voluminous and help make your arrangement look fuller -- meaning less flowers needed [and less money spent].

Prince Harry reportedly had bacon sandwiches for late-night party guests. How else can couples can treat their guests after an evening reception?
I love my food trucks and they are so hot right now. Have your favorite food truck or two park in front of your venue and treat your guests to a Belgian waffle, ice cream cone or an In-N-Out burger even!

Most couples won't depart in a horse-drawn carriage, but what are some other memorable ways husband and wife can make their exit?
I have had couples do some very amazing, very memorable exits. A bride surprised her groom with the Vespa he had been dreaming about for years. When they came outside to leave, he found it parked out front with a "Just Married" sign, some tin can streamers and matching helmets.

My favorite ever, though, was a groom who surprised his bride with a 25-foot crescent moon made of fabric that he built onto a golf cart. It only went 5 MPH; it took them about 30 minutes to get to their hotel less than a mile away but they had the ride of their lives!

Anything else couples can copy from Prince William and Kate's ceremony?
The ceremony music played quite a significant role in the royal wedding. The choirs and hymns work well, say, if you're off to marry a crowned prince but it can be too much pageantry and fanfare for us commoners. I'm not too confident this trend will trickle down to the masses I'm afraid. So if the Hubert Parry anthems aren't your cup of British tea, try something a bit more contemporary and meaningful like Train's "Marry Me."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Mini-Moon Destinations Fit for Royalty

Top event planner David Beahm and The Travel Siblings share their destination picks for a quick post-wedding jaunt with your mate:

Prince William and Kate Middleton just jetted off to the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean for ten days. While fabulous, many people can't afford a 10-stay stay (reportedly for $6,500 a night!) on a tropical island. However, the weekend "mini-moon" they took in the U.K. just after the wedding was also a wonderful idea and is much easier to emulate. The royals didn't disclose exactly where they took their little honeymoon, but here are my getaway suggestions for us mere untitled mortals:

Winvian in Litchfield Hills, CT
Set on 118 acres of pristine woodlands, Winvian, which is part of the david beahm destinations collection, features 18 unique, cozy cottages built for two. ''It's absolutely perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle of a city like New York,'' says Beahm. You can happily hole up in your cottage or get outdoors and hike, bike, kayak and play tennis. If shopping is your thing, Litchfield is a haven for antique hunting.

But my guess is you'll want to get outdoors since the grounds, formerly farmland, are gorgeous, especially in the spring. There's also a restaurant run by executive chef Chris Eddy (who was trained by Alain Ducasse and Daniel Boulud) -- in case you don't want to get away from civilization entirely.

Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, CA
The Travel Siblings, Harlan and Kara, enthusiastically recommend the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California, calling it "one of our favorite places to stay on the planet." It has 39 rooms and two private houses, all featuring decks and stunning ocean or cliff views. Perched on 98 acres of seaside ridges and 1,200 feet above the Pacific, the inn offers wood-and-glass guest cottages built around existing trees, plus the ultra-private Ocean House and Coast House.

"So close to the edge of the earth," Harlan and Kara say, "you get the impression that you've joined the clouds." Also on tap: couple's massages; an on-premise restaurant, Sierra Mar, with a 13,000-bottle wine cellar; and nature abounding.

Ballyfin in County Laois, Ireland
An Irish country house hotel opening this month, Harlan calls Ballyfin "an oasis one hour from Dublin -- the perfect mix of city and country." It has 15 rooms on a 600-acre estate, and each room has its own theme. Harlan says, "The Little Library room would just be so cool for a mini-moon. It actually has its own little library!"

Ballyfin was originally a private house built in the 1820s, which has been faithfully restored to its original glory. Harlan and Kara say, "You really feel like you're in a manor house from a Jane Austen novel."

There are plenty of opportunities for you and your partner to feel like lord or lady of the manor -- from eating in the stately French dining room to picking your own fruit and vegetables from Ballyfin's garden to participating in any of the on-site activities, such as fishing, tennis, archery, croquet, falconry (falconry!), clay pigeon shooting or swimming in the indoor pool. And when you're done feeling like royalty, you won't have any paparazzi waiting for you. Take that, Will and Kate!

Last month, Keira Knightley served as a bridesmaid for her brother's fiancée. But her performance wasn't picture perfect.

The 26-year-old Brit star chatted with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night about her wedding troubles.

"Every drink I had went straight down the front and then the food went straight down the front," she said. "Then I went to the bathroom and I got it caught in the toilet door and it all ripped up the back."

At least she didn't look better than the bride!

Watch Keira describe her wedding mishaps below:
Earlier this year, Anthropologie launched its first bridal collection, BHLDN, which includes whimsical wedding gowns, bridesmaid and party dresses, and accessories.

Now, with the brand's just-launched décor line, you can carry that same totally-cool-totally-you vibe throughout your event. Full of cake pedestals, place cards, table decorations and glassware, the offerings are a little bit quirky, but timeless.

We're crushing on the silver-plated Sweethearts' Forks from Woodenhive. The hand-stamped vintage set is also available with "Bride & Groom" imprints ($24). Forgo the traditional champagne flutes for the Enduring Loops Toasting Glasses. These hand-blown Slovakian tumblers feature a tri-looped Gillouche design along the rim ($36).
Yup, that's Keira Knightley. And no, it's not a movie set.

The British actress played a supporting role for her brother Caleb Knightley's fiancée Kerry Nixon. The couple's wedding took place in Glasgow on Sunday.

The 26-year-old star wore an above-the-knee, full-skirted purple dress, paired with basic black pumps and an unkempt bob!
We asked wedding and event planner Brian Worley, who recently starred in the CW's Shedding for the Wedding, which royally-inspired bridal trends will pop up after Prince William and Kate Middleton say "I do" on April 29:

The royal wedding has become the behemoth bridal event of 2011. With over two billion pairs of eyes expected to watch the special day, it will mark the beginning of many bridal trends.

When I produce and design a wedding, I always try to impress upon my clients that their wedding is "their" wedding, not their mom's or their grandmother's. But as royalty, Prince William and Kate have a much harder time making it their own. Their wedding will bring a return to more traditional elements -- things that have become less important over the years, like classic attire and engraved invitations.

Gallery: The Royal Weddings of Windsor

Of course, the wedding dress will set the bar for the rest of the year, and will become the defining look for 2011. Princess Diana's dress was, and still is, a topic of conversation 30 years later. Her iconic gown was very much the style of the 80's. Wedding, prom and bridesmaid dresses of that time were all influenced by the design. It ushered in a decade of taffeta, puffed sleeves and layers of crinoline tulle under a full skirt, and helped make Diana one of the leading fashion icons of her day.

Kate will do the exact same thing. Her dress will certainly be replicated, much like celebrities' Oscar dresses, allowing any bride to feel like a real princess on her wedding day.

Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress Designer Revealed?

And like the dress, Diana's gigantic cascading bouquet became the quintessential representation of the 80's bride. Thankfully, we've progressed past that, but Kate's bouquet will have the same effect, setting the standard in bridal bouquets for the next few years.

Plus, with a wedding reception in a venue like Buckingham Palace, formality and grandeur will come back into fashion -- think lots of crystals for extra sparkle and large, lush centerpieces at receptions.

I wonder if a multi-tiered fruitcake will become the top choice after April 29?

Annie, played by SNL's Kristen Wiig, has just been given a dubious distinction -- maid of honor for her best friend Lillian (played by another SNL veteran Maya Rudolph).

The flick, which opens May 13, follows the group of bridesmaids as they handle the highs and lows of wedding party duties. Fingers crossed for a dose of Bradley Cooper!
In an homage to The Hangover, the ladies took to the pages of the May issue of Harper's Bazaar, documenting the collateral credit card damage from a retail binge, which includes some Louis Vuitton love.
Celebrity Makeup Artist for Rimmel London Liz Pugh shares her second and final wedding looks inspired by Kate Middleton. The second look plays up a fresh bridal glow, while the third is warmer with corals and peaches.

	Look #1: Regal purple peepers

Look #2
First, apply moisturizer, primer, foundation and concealer, setting with loose powder (see look #1 for step-by-step instructions).

Eyes
Go super natural with just a little definition on the eyes. Closely draw along the top lash line with Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in Stormy Grey and soften with a small brush or your finger. Apply Glam'Eyes Mono Eyeshadow in Night Jewel over the liner, staying close to the lashes; this will set the pencil. For pale skin, mix this shade with Glam'Eyes Mono Eyeshadow in Glam Ice to soften the charcoal grey. You can also add this shadow to the inner corner of the eyes to open them up. For a gorgeous soft shimmer on pale complexions, swept it along the top of the cheekbones. Try the Spicy Bronze shade on olive and darker skin tones. Keep it at the top of the cheekbone, not on the cheek, or it will appear too shiny in flash photography.

Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress Designer Revealed?

Next, apply a lighter concealer under the brows to add a natural highlight without looking made up. Concealer is perfect for this look because it won't be too light or add any shimmer, but it will make the brows look super groomed. Finish the eyes with a coat of mascara, such as Glam'Eyes Day 2 Night Mascara, to the top and bottom lashes.

Cheeks
For a pretty, healthy cheek, blend Lasting Finish Blush in Pink Rose to the apples of the cheeks and add Glam'Eyes Mono Eyeshadow in Spicy Bronze with a soft brush to the top of the cheekbones. I know it's eye shadow, but for me, there are no rules with makeup! Lipstick also works as a great alternative to cream blush.

Lips
Finish the look with a soft pink lip. Blend Exaggerate Lip Liner in East End Snob over the entire lip and press with your fingers, so there are no hard lines. Then apply a coat of Moisture Renew Lip Gloss in Pink Spa (pictured). Be aware of adding too much gloss to your wedding day makeup look, as it can reflect in pictures. Lightly press a tissue over the gloss to remove just the right amount.

Look #3
Eyes
Using Glam'Eyes Quad Eye Shadow in Urban Flower (pictured), apply the peach shade over the lid up to the socket, then apply the taupe (the darker shade) to the socket to shape the eyes. Blend a little underneath the eye, close to the lashes at the outer edge. And add a little of light pink shade to the inner corner of the eye and a little under the brow bone.

Finish the eyes with Glam'Eyes Day 2 Night Mascara, using the pink end of the dual-sided brush to lengthen the lashes rather than adding volume for a more natural look. Then use the black-brush end on just the outer top lashes to volumize and give the look of a few false lashes.

Cheeks
For the cheeks, add Lasting Finish Blush and Highlighter in Autumn Catwalk to the apples of the cheeks, blending upwards towards the hairline. Then add a pop of the brighter coral directly to the apple of the cheek. This will give a gorgeous glow. If you're really nervous on the big day (and have the world watching like Kate), you might lose a little color in your cheeks, so this pop will really help.

Lips
Finish the look with 1000 Kisses Lip Liner in Nude or Spice, depending on how dark your natural lips are. Fill in your lips completely, as the color needs to stay on all day and you won't want the lipstick to wear off. Leave a line around the edge of the lip, then press on Moisture Renew Lip Color in Auburn Breeze with your fingers.

Bride-to-be Kate Middleton is known for doing her own makeup (even on the day of her engagement photo shoot). But with two billion sets of eyes watching on April 29, she may want to take some expert advice.

Celebrity Makeup Artist for Rimmel London Liz Pugh created three wedding looks that would look great on Kate (or you) on the big day. First up, a regal purple palette for the eyes:

A white dress (presuming it will be white) can drain the face, so it's important to add the right amount of color. Also, take into account if there is a lot of detailing on the dress. The makeup should complement it -- nothing too crazy and heavy. It should be about emphasizing what you have, not masking it.

Foundation
First, apply moisturizer, massaging it into the skin to get the blood flowing like a mini facial. Be aware of using a high-factor sunscreen under your makeup on the day, as the ingredients often cause the skin to look lighter in flash photography.

Then, start with the perfect base. A primer will keep your makeup in place all day. Rimmel London Fix and Perfect is perfect for this. I would recommend a long-lasting foundation for the wedding because you'll need to look fantastic all day and night! Pay extra attention to any redness in the skin, usually around the nose, eyes and lips, as the cameras will pick up on this. I would suggest Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25-Hour Foundation. It has a lightweight finish, so you won't look heavily made up, plus it'll last from day to night.

	Bridal Beauty: Skincare Countdown

Cover any under eye dark circles. Be aware not to choose a concealer that is too light as it will really stand out on camera.

Set the foundation and concealer with loose powder by pressing the powder into the skin with a puff, paying attention to the t-zone. This area should be matte; a natural shine in the cheeks is fine but the center of the face should not look oily -- a bridal and princess no-no!

Eyes
Kate is simply gorgeous and can carry any makeup look. On her wedding day, she should look natural and radiant, so no bright blues on the eyes and no experimenting! I would tone down the liner she often wears under her eyes, as it is too harsh for a white dress.

On the eyes, use Glam'Eyes Mono Eyeshadow. Apply Plum Romance (pictured) over the lid, up to the socket.

For a little extra added definition, apply Night Jewel very close to the lashes at the outer edge, using a small damp brush. I would add a dot of this to the inner corner of the eyes too to make them look really fresh and awake. Blend all of this together so there are no obvious lines between shades.

Then apply one coat of mascara to the top lashes, using a soft black or dark brown rather than very black for a softer look in photos. Try Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Mascara in Black/Brown.

I love Kate's brows; they are a great shape. I wouldn't do anything apart from brushing them into shape and filling in any gaps with Rimmel London Professional Eyebrow Pencil. Or for a softer look, apply an eye shadow matching the brows, not darker. If anything, choose a shade slightly lighter. Once applied, it will blend with the brow. When I work on models and celebrities, I often use a baby toothbrush -- apply a little hairspray to it and then brush upwards through the brow. This will keep them in perfect shape.

Cheeks
On the cheeks, you need a pretty flush. I would use Lasting Finish Blush and Highlighter in Spring Flower. Blend the three shades together with a soft brush and apply to the apples of the cheeks, blending up to the hairline and then down to soften any edges. Then add the brightest shade of the trio directly to the apple of the cheek to give a pop of color.

Lips
For the lips, apply a long-lasting lip liner to the entire lip as a base -- a great tip for any bride. It will help the color stay on, and if the lipstick wears off, you'll still be left with some color. Rimmel London 1000 Kisses Stay-On Lip Liner is a fantastic one. Choose a shade to match the lip color you are using. Be aware of anything too pale; it will look washed out against a white dress, as will brown shades. So choose something a little brighter or a shade darker than your natural lip shade. Try 1000 Kisses liner in Nude, Spice or Wild Clover, then Rimmel London Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick in Vintage (pictured) or Goddess over the top.

Stay tuned for looks #2 and #3!
Like most of the world, British Vogue has caught royal wedding fever! As Alexandra Shulman writes in her editor's letter, the May issue is a "delicious confection of all things matrimonial." Taking inspiration from Kate Middleton and the upcoming nuptials, the magazine includes a feature on the bride-to-be's style and what it means to be a modern princess, a look inside the wedding albums of some fashion greats and lots of feminine styles in white for those not walking down the aisle.
Plus, the publication boasts three different covers (a first in its 95-year history) with Natalia Vodianova, Freja Beha Erichsen and Lara Stone modeling dreamy, romantic looks. Vodianova appears in a silk-and-lace gown with a tulle bolero from Vivienne Westwood, Erichsen dons a silk faille design with rose detailing from Oscar de la Renta, along with a veil by Elie Saab Couture, and Stone shows off a bloom-adorned dress by Bruce Oldfield (who is rumored to be creating Kate's wedding gown).

Looking for something blue for your big day? The answer may be at the tip of your fingers! Essie just released their 2011 Bridal Collection called Borrowed and Blue.

Featuring four shades, the group includes Borrowed and Blue,a pale blue hue that's a fun pastel alternative; Made to Honor, a nude with a slight pink tint; Better Together, a sheer classic pink and First Dance, a bold attention-grabbing red.

The brand's experts recommend that you experiment with nail color at least one month before your wedding, especially if you're going a little outside of the bridal box! And don't be afraid to layer complementary shades. Just like you and your new hubbie, sometimes two are better than one.

Also, start to indulge in weekly manicures and pedicures beginning at least two months prior, the pros suggest. The extra pampering will get your hands and nail beds super healthy and ready for those photo closeups! Plus, it's great wedding-planning stress relief!

The collection is available this month in salons and at Essie.com; $8 each.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Look: Reese Witherspoon's Wedding Photos

Reese Witherspoon was truly a blushing bride. In a custom-designed Monique Lhuillier pink-hued gown with a Chantilly lace corset bodice and full tulle A-line skirt, the actress, 35, wed Jim Toth, 40, in Ojai, California in March.

According to the latest issue of People, which includes the exclusive wedding photos, her dress also featured a silk satin ribbon with cascading silk flowers. The bride's 11-year-old daughter Ava served as maid of honor, wearing a custom Lhuillier that matched her mom's.

For the reception, Witherspoon switched into another creation by the go-to dress designer: a white silk minidress with a party skirt.
Perms, dye jobs, extensions -- we're not talking about hair, we're actually referring to eyelashes! When mascara isn't enough, there are ways to take your flutter over the top for your wedding day.

Lash Perms
Imagine waking up in the morning with perfectly curled lashes and not an eyelash curler in sight? Enter the perm. It's comeback from the '80s, but unlike its predecessor, this one's solely for your fringe. It works much like a traditional perm. Upper lashes are placed in a teeny rubber roller. You can pick the size you want -- smaller for more curl, larger for less. A gentle perm solution is applied to set the curl in your lashes, and about an hour later, you'll see noticeable curl. And similar to a hair perm, avoid wetting your eyelashes for two hours after the perm. The results last through the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes, about four to six weeks.
$90, Shizuka New York, Day Spa, NYC, shizukany.com

Lash Extensions
Unlike the plastic falsies that looked, well, false, today's faux fringe is made of a lightweight silk and polyester blend that looks and feels just like your own lashes. They are applied one at a time (up to 80) to your lash line with a bonding agent that's safe and nonirritating. Lashes are available in three different lengths, from everyday to red-carpet worthy. The process takes about two hours and lashes typically last up to two months, though touch-ups are recommended every three weeks.
Prices start at $250, As "u" Wish Nail Spa in Hoboken, New Jersey, asuwishnailspa.com

Lash Color
Adding a tint to your fringe is like wearing 'round-the-clock mascara minus the clumping. Most salons use a safe vegetable dye, which won't irritate your eyes. A technician will first place stickers around the eyelids to prevent the dye from reaching the eye. The dye is applied to the upper and lower lashes and left to sit for about 5 minutes and then rinsed off. Tints come in different colors like black, brown and auburn. Results last four to six weeks.
It's a nice day for a white wedding -- after all, an all-white affair is a classic and timeless choice that can go either traditional or trendy, depending on your personal style. The clean, monochromatic palette works well with both modern and contemporary venues and looks sophisticated in any setting whether country club or city rooftop. While purple and tangerine may come and go, "you will never look back at your wedding pictures and be in shock that you picked a dated color palette," says Amy Atlas of Amy Atlas Events. Stationer Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York especially loves the chic look for beach weddings as it "creates such a clean pure palette of all the guests against the light sandy beach and such a lovely contrast against the crisp blue ocean and sky," she says. "It looks amazing in pictures, too." Click through the gallery below and get inspired by these all-white wonders.

Invitations
Any wedding style starts with the invitation. Stationer Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York suggests the best ways to communicate the tone of an-all-white wedding on your invite: "As the invitation must be legible, it's really important that you make sure you use the right printing techniques that are appropriate for your audience," she says (also make sure your stationer is using quality printing methods and paper stock). Below are the top techniques:

1. White or pearl foil stamping on white paper: This technique looks chic and modern on an uncoated or a shimmering white stock. Make sure you're getting deep and crisp impressions of the text so guests can read it.

2. Silver foil printing on white stock: Silver ink is easier to read, and the silver foil conveys a light feeling without dominating a white color palette (just leave plenty of white space for the type so you see a lot of the white paper that communicates your vibe, Johnson says).

3. Tone-on-tone letterpress printing: This is a luxe way to incorporate intricate details without making them too overpowering, Johnson says. Since the ink is so light, you can be a little more daring with patterns because the overall effect is subtle.

Guests
So, can you ask guests to wear white? Sure! Most friends and family will be excited to dress in the crisp, clean palette of your wedding (plus, it solves the issue of what to wear). However, be sure to state your request in your correspondence with guests. Etiquette expert Faye Rogaski of Socialsklz in New York suggests including the information on the RSVP card of your invitation: Try something like, "This is a white-themed wedding; please dress in white!" or "Please dress accordingly for our white wedding!" And if you have a wedding Web site, include it there as well. Get inspired by this bridal party dressed in all-white designs by Thread.
Cake
The wedding cake is one of the centerpieces of the reception, so choose a cake that fits with the all-white theme. Butter's pale yellow hue gives this genuine buttercream three-tier confection by MarneyCakes in Oceanside, NY, an elegant ivory tint. Owner Marney White says you can do any kind of cake beneath a white exterior, but this creation features two tiers of lemon cake with vanilla buttercream filling, and one tier of cannoli cream, all iced in pure almond buttercream (for a pure white effect, opt for fondant). The addition of white gum-paste stephanotis and hydrangea makes for a sweet finish.

Flowers
Many brides carry an all-white bouquet down the aisle, but consider expanding the look to your centerpieces and decor. Peter Grontas of Flowers of the World in New York says white weddings are wonderful to design because "we can create a unique aesthetic with varying shades and tones of whites." Your florist can play with different flower varieties such as hydrangea, peonies, orchids, roses, ranunculus and calla lilies to create a fresh texture and new twist on the white palette. And get creative: "Using reflective touches such as crystals and mirrors can further enhance the elegant and glamorous look," Grontas says.
Bridesmaid Dresses
Instead of thinking you need to stand out in a snow-colored gown, consider a chic-looking all-white wedding party. White bridesmaid dresses have recently become more popular, says Melissa Akey of Thread, which has a gorgeous collection of festive white frocks. "Brides are starting to appreciate that an all-white palette can complement, rather than compete with, their wedding gown," Akey says. "A party of all-white bridesmaids is an easy and unexpected way to create a fresh, crisp and elegant overall aesthetic for a wedding."
Dessert Bar
This sleek all-white dessert table by Amy Atlas included an enticing assortment of torrone nougat, coconut macaroons, dusted truffles and white lemonade with calligraphed "Best Wishes" straws. The best thing about white: It all coordinates. "You won't have to worry about matching hues of colors (like finding the perfect pink flowers to match the pink linens)," Atlas says.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bridal Hair Care: Go Naturally Curly

If the words "curly hair" and "updo" make you think of 1980s prom photos, think again: Today's upswept curls can look chic, sleek and very 2011. "A lot of curly girls like to keep their curls for their wedding day because that's how they feel most comfortable," says hair and makeup stylist Donna Spinelli of Amazing Face and Luscious Locks in Montclair, New Jersey.

How to Go Curly
Whether they've got natural waves or tight ringlets, many brides are loving the romantic feel of their tresses loosely half up with smooth and defined wedding-ready curls: "Get the curls sleeker and frizz-free using a small curling iron -- about the same size as your curls -- then pin them loosely to preserve that curly style, but making it more formal," Spinelli says. Others are turning to the runway, where a little frizz (usually a fear) and teasing makes for a modern and Hollywood-inspired look that often complements a glamorous, couture gown and can work with your hair's natural texture.

Put Your Curls On a Diet
Spinelli recommends putting your hair on a "heat diet" for a few months before the wedding: no blow drier or flat iron, and use a deep-conditioning treatment like MoroccanOil once a week. "Curly hair is naturally drier and more brittle by nature," Spinelli says. "Hydration is the key to keep it looking healthy, and the healthier your curls are, the better they look. On the days you don't have to do any heat styling, just let it go."

How to Prep
To fight frizz, Spinelli says to wash your hair the night before (or morning of) the wedding. Use a silicone-based frizz-treatment serum or MoroccanOil (for thicker hair, try equal parts serum and curl cream) and let the curls air-dry, as a blow drier will just add to the frizz. When your hair is about 20-percent dry, twirl one-inch sections of hair with your finger to preserve the curl, then let it air dry (for fine hair, twist all your hair into a loose bun on the top of your head and secure with bobby pins). This will preserve a frizz-free look that will make for a great updo. The result: a gorgeous wave and relaxed curl.
Get the Look
Whether you want to look traditional or trendy, take a cue from these bridal updo style suggestions perfect for curly girls, courtesy of Edward Tricomi of Warren-Tricomi Salons:

Traditional

What is it: A romantic, renaissance-inspired updo style that works best on hair that is shoulder length or longer.

How to do it: When creating this updo, you don't want such tight curls. Make the hair fuller and more voluminous by using a double curling iron. Create lines by separating sections in your hair: This will make it easier and softer to pull the hair back and up. Spray the pieces with a setting lotion and blow-dry them until completely soft and easy to work with. Pin the sections to the back of the head and as far up as you'd like. Curls will gently fall in the back and the style will be complete and look effortless.

Trendy

What it is: A vintage-inspired or bohemian look using partial braids. This style works equally well on short or long hair.

How to do it: This hairstyle is all about creating the right texture for the right length of hair. An appropriate amount of curls should be incorporated according to face structure, body of hair and theme. Braids will add extra texture to an otherwise pulled-back look. Horizontally braid the front section of hair and pin it to the side of your head, or wrap a braid around the base of a ponytail or bun. Adding accessories such as flowers, headbands or tiaras creates beautiful shapes and can hold the hair tightly.

Permalink | Email this | Comments
